Choosing a language school and teacher When choosing a language school or teacher, be sure to choose one that will really benefit your needs. Making the right choice in a language school or teacher could considerably change your outlook on language learning, as well as your actual learning curve. If you are relying solely on the language
school or teacher
to improve you language abilities, then you also must understand that
your
rate of learning will be greatly diminished. There are many
alternatives
to schools and resources to available to help accelerate your learning
curve.
For parents wishing their children to learn a language, there must be adequate support and reinforcement in the home. Some additional language resources include:
* If you belong to or live near a university, they jut might have a self-access center. This can be used on-sight in most cases. Some require you to be a student, and some do not. It does not hurt to check it out. * Books, Magazines and Newspapers. Find your level and read aloud to yourself. Try sounding out the words and get a feel for the language as it tastes in your mouth. Even if you understand very little of the text, you are at least starting to get a feel for the language. * TV, Videos and Movies. If you have closed captioned, now is your chance to make use of it. While watching your favorite TV program or Video in the target language, turn on the Closed Caption option on your TV. Read along with the spoken language and in addition to getting visual and audio reinforcement, you can also play with finding errors in the text (there always are). * Language circles. You can find one in your area or establish one yourself. As you will see in the next section, Collaborative Learning and Peer Practice, language acquisition and practice isn't only possible through a native speaker.
